Appeal Process

If a student is not approved for a requested accommodation and they feel their request is both reasonable and necessary, the student may appeal the decision to up to two additional University officials following a request for a secondary review. This process is not meant to be stressful or negative; rather it is designed to be an opportunity for an external party to make an independent decision regarding a student's request.

Please note: Students have 14 days to appeal a deferral notice from Disability Services.

  • 1. Request for Secondary Review

Following a deferral of a requested accommodation, a student may submit a request for a secondary review. This is done by the student communicating their request through the secondary review request button below. Within the request, the student should clearly state the accommodation they are requesting along with a detailed explanation of why they feel that the accommodation is reasonable and necessary as a result of their documented disability. Following submission, their case will be re-reviewed by the initial reviewer and a determination will be communicated in written form.

  • 2. Appeal to the Associate Vice President of Health & Well-being

If the student is not satisfied with the decision regarding an accommodation request following a secondary review, they may submit an appeal to the Associate Vice President of Health & Well-being (currently: Dr. Aesha L. Uqdah). The appeal must clearly state the reason(s) that the student is filing the appeal, and must be based on the records submitted to Disability Services. Following submission of this appeal, the AVP will be granted access to the student’s records housed within Disability Services so as to allow for a holistic and complete review. Following review, the AVP will communicate their determination and rationale in writing to both the student and the Director of Disability services.

  • 3. Appeal to the Vice President of Student Development

If the student is not satisfied with the decision regarding an accommodation request following an appeal to the Associate Vice President of Health & Well-being, they may submit an appeal to the Vice President of Student Development (currently: Todd Adams). The appeal must clearly state the reason(s) that the student is filing the appeal, and must be based on the records submitted to Disability Services. Following submission of this appeal, the Vice President of Student Development will be granted access to the student’s records housed within Disability Services so as to allow for a holistic and complete review. Following review, the Vice President of Student Development will communicate their determination and rationale in writing to both the student and the Director of Disability services.
